Designer bags made with repurposed horse tack

In a small studio in Colorado Cigdem Aritan designs unique equestrian inspired designer bags using antique horse tack and equestrian hard ware.

Each bag comes together using the traditional saddle stitch, cross stitch and or sometimes the simple running stitch, making them a distinct, beautiful element to the design of the bag. In the early days, a walk to ponder the dilemma over what to use for straps and closures brought the question to an end. NEW leather strapping and shiny silver hardware was not the look we wanted. Our walk found us in a saddle shop and antique tool shop that had a huge pile of old horse tack. Today Cigdem searches farms, ranches, horse training centers & auctions for tack.

Most of my materials are sourced locally — from farmers, carriage repair men, farm auctions… the list goes on. It’s been an adventure gathering these treasures and bringing them new life!

Every bag has history and story. The people I meet and the landscape, they all provide inspiration. Modern enough to carry in the city, rugged enough for a horse ride.
